It is one of the panchakarma therapies wherein purgation is induced by medicinal drugs and helps in the elimination of toxins from the body. Due to its broad spectrum result, it is one of the most popular among the panchakarma procedure, hence it is considered as the sadhana karma and detoxification procedure.
Procedure
The procedure Virechana is performed in 3 steps:
1. Poorva Karma
This is the preparatory procedure. This is performed before the main therapy. it includes deepana and pachana (use of different appetites and digestion medicinal herbs)followed by snehapana(oral administration of medicinal ghee) for 3 to 7 days. That is usually followed by abhyangam and swedanam(external application of oil and sudation).
2. Pradana Karma
Here the doctor administers the virechana drug as per the disease strength of the patient and digestive capacity of the patient.
3. Paschat Karma
They are known as samsarjana karma, in which the patient is advised for specific dietary regimens for a specific period of time after the main procedure.
Purpose Of Virechana
This procedure is targeted to expel the increased pitta dosha (alone) and pitta along with Vata and Kapha.
INDICATION
- Mainly indicated in different skin disorders, blisters, abscesses, liver disorders, etc.
- Pitta associated with Kapha(as in certain types of acid peptic disorders)
- Pitta is associated with Vata as in the case of gout.
This treatment concentrates on toxins that occur in the liver, gallbladder, and also in the gastrointestinal tract. This is usually administered 3 days after Vamana treatment. The toxins are ultimately eliminated through the rectum.

Different types of Virechana
- Snigdha Virechana
Castor oil is mainly used in this. Here it is mainly indicated in pitta associated with Vata disorders.
- Rooksha Virechana
Trivrit lehya is commonly used in this. Mainly indicated in pitta along with Kapha disorders
